Uno de los giros importantes de este documental consiste en incorporar en él la cultura sherpa, sus tradiciones, creencias, su trabajo como porteadores de altura en el Everest, como ha cambiado su visión de la montaña y sus habilidades como escaladores. Jamling ara de interlocutor para este propósito.

camp II 6.300 m

El viaje al campo II ha sido rápido y provechoso. Tan solo estuvimos un día (la mayoría del tiempo dentro de una tormenta), pero mereció la pena por muchos aspectos. Incorporamos nuevo material al documental, filmando en HD con Michael Brown y 4 sherpas, los mismos que van a subir con él a cumbre para seguir al x-treme team. Es normal que la cascada cambie de un año para otro, es una gran lengua de hielo que cae y que está en movimiento. Lo que no es tan normal es que el recorrido del campo I al II se haya vuelto tan complicado, ahora, a diferencia de hace 11 años, se abren grandes grietas que tienen que superarse con escaleras y que obligan también, a realizar largas travesías de derecha a izquierda para poder avanzar. Hace 11 años era un camino directo, con alguna grieta que saltar, pero relativamente tranquilo. Supongo que este es otro ejemplo del calentamiento global!!!! The trip to Camp II was quick but useful, we only spend a day up there, most of the time in a snow storm, but it was worth it for many reasons. Michael Brown shoot new material in HD, along with 4 sherpas, the same ones that will go with him to the summit in a few days. I am not concern about the changes on the Ice fall, it is a long ice river that moves every day, so it has to change, but I was not expecting to find such a complicate way going from camp I to camp II. 11 years a go, the way was a relatively peacefully and strait, just one crevasse here and then. Now, crevasses are huge, and beside that, the way crosses from one side to de glacier to the other 3 or 4 times. I Guess we are seeing another effects of world over worming ???

Caudwell Everest x-treme

Antes de subir al campo II estamos aprovechando el tiempo para rodar con el “Caudwell Everest x-treme”, e incorporar en el documental el trabajo científico que están haciendo aquí.
Más o menos son unas 35-45 personas entre personal científico y médicos.
Cada semana, durante casi 3 meses, reciben dos grupos de trekers que se han ofrecido voluntarios, algo más de 200 y a los que se les realiza diferentes pruebas de resistencia, de sangre, de capacidad pulmonar y de memoria, durante todo el camino hasta el base. Los laboratorios están situados en Kathmandú, en Nanche, el Periche y en el base.
El personal científico también realiza estas pruebas y algunos de los médicos irán a cumbre, donde se les tomará una muestra de sangre.
También se realizará diferentes pruebas en el campo II y en el collado sur.
El presupuesto de esta súper expedición es de 2.000.000 de libras
Para este documental yo solo voy al campo II, por lo que estoy realizando con Marc, pruebas cognitivas en el base y luego en el campo II.
Aún que creo que no habrá ninguna sorpresa, mi limitación es la misma aquí abajo que allá arriba…… ja,ja,ja…..;-)
Otra de las pruebas que nos han hecho ha Jamling y a mi, ha consistido en hacer una foto de la retina para ver si hay alguna hemorragia, una especie de eco de las arterias cerebrales y luego ha medido el oxigeno de estas. De momento todo bien.
Estos chicos están haciendo un gran trabajo.

We are filming the “Caudwell Everest x-treme”, because they are going to be part of this documentary as well. They work in a program to research into hypoxia (low oxygen levels) and human performance at extreme altitude. There is a group of 35-45 scientist and doctors.
They are studding over two hundred volunteers as they climb progressively higher from Luckla to base camp.
They also will do a measurement of the level of oxygen in human blood at the top of Everest.
I am doing a cognition tests at base camp and another one at camp II…………….but I guess that I know the results….my limitations are the same down here that up there……. ;-) ha,ha,ha.!!!!
Marc, the doctor, has also take a photo of Jamling’s retina and mine to see if there is any hemorrhagic problem, he also has take a kind of eco on our cerebral arteries and has measured the Oxygen of those, from now everything OK.

Campo Base 5.300 m

Ayer llegamos al base en medio de una tormenta. Nos recibió muy calidamente el equipo de “Caudwell Everest x-treme”, con quien compartiremos estas dos semanas, ya que el documental también recogerá sus investigaciones. Que pequeño es el mundo, entre los médicos del grupo se encontraba un viejo amigo que hacia 17 años que no veía, Nigel, a quien conocí en un YMCA en Irlanda cuando un verano fui a dar clases de escalada y aprender inglés.
Desde hace días corría el rumor que los ordenadores y los Ipod dejaban de funcionar en el base………….a mi me sonaba raro, hace tiempo que llevo ordenador y nunca había oído nada del tema.
Pero efectivamente, los Ipod que van con disco duro y los ordenadores Apple y algún que otro ordenador han petado, el mío ha pasado la prueba de fuego. La causa por lo visto es la manera en la que los discos duros están sellados y como la falta de presión de aquí les afecta, presionándolos e impidiendo que funcionen. We finally reach base camp yesterday in a snow storm, but we hade a worm reception by the “Caudwell Everest x-treme”, we are going to shear base camp with then these two weeks, as they are part of the documentary too. How small is the world, in the doctor’s team I found an old friend from my youngest stages of life, when 17 years ago I went to teach climbing and learn English in and Ireland YMCA.
During the lat few days, there’s been roomers about computers and Ipods crashing at base camp….. I didn’t know what to think because I have been caring computers on expeditions for many years, and nothing happen before. But the roomers where right: the Ipod that work with hard disc, Apple and some other computer just stopped working up here. Supposedly because the way they are sealed and how the different of pressure up here affect them. I’m save, my computer work well.

En Lobuche 4.900 m

Estamos a un día de llegar al base, lo bueno de estar dos noches en cada lugar es que nadie del equipo está sintiendo los efectos de la altura de una manera dramática y están disfrutando del trek muchísimo, la verdad es que me da gusto ver como aprecian este lugar. Hacia 11 años que no pisaba esta parte del camino, hay que decir que ha cambiado bastante en cuanto a facilidades, lodges, servicios, etc…en el fondo me da un poco de nostalgia y egoístamente lo prefería original como era antes, pero la parte positiva es que hay muchas familias que han mejorado su nivel de vida y han encontrado trabajo gracias al aumento del turismo. It’s taking our time to get to base camp, I hope that finally tomorrow we will be there; the good part of staying two nights in each place is that the filming team is doing a good acclimatization and they are not feeling dramatically the lock of oxygen, I am glad to see how they are enjoying this trip. I have seen many changes on the way, the facilities and the lodges had change allot, I feel a kind of nostalgic looking back, but the good things is that there is more families improving their live style thanks to the affluence of trekkers.

En Tengboche 3.860 m

Todos los trabajos tienen su parte dura y el de filmar no es menos. Mientras yo estaba calentita dentro de mi saco de dormir durmiendo, el quipo de filiación se pasó toda la noche despierto junto a la cámara gravando por secuencias (time lap) toda la noche y el amanecer en el monasterio. A las 8 de la noche empezaban y a las 5 de la mañana terminaban. A las 8 de la mañana salíamos en dirección a Dingboche, 4.200 m… sin dormir. Anda que no ¡!!

Filming is harder that what I expected, but no for me this time (that I spend the hold night inside my worm sleeping bad), but for the filming crew, that was shooting a time lap sequence on the monastery, they expended the night up there, started at 8 pm and finished at 5 am, all night awake. At 8 am we left to Dingboche, those guys with out sleeping….holly cow!!!!

En Namche 3.340 m

A pesar del mal tiempo, donde nos ha llovido cada día y de los continuos cambios de luz, que lleva de cabeza a Brat y su fotometro, creo que están saliendo algunas escenas muy bonitas. También estamos filmando parte del estudio del “Caudwell Everest x-treme”. Hemos estado 3 días en Namche, por hoy ya hemos terminado y en un rato me voy con Jamling a comerme un pedazo de pastel de chocolate a algunas de las increíbles “bakery” que hay en el pueblo, mañana seguiremos con Tengboche.

Even with this bad weather, every day rains here, I thing that the filming team has captured some fabulous scenes. There is been some filming on the “Caudwell Everest x-treme” too. We have spent 3 days at Namche, we are done for to day, so I am heading down to the village with Jamling to get a big piece of chocolate cake. Tomorrow will go to Tengboche.
